The short answer
A citation in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode is a link to your page shown inside Google's generative answer. Google says you do not need special AI markup or an AI text file; the page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Write a direct answer near the top, keep practice facts consistent with your Google Business Profile, measure impressions in the Search Console Generative AI performance report, and skip tactics Google lists as unhelpful. What an AI Overview citation is
When a patient asks Google a full question, AI Overviews and AI Mode can summarize several results and show links to some of the pages they used. Search Console calls each time a link to your site appears in those features an impression in generative AI. That link is the citation this guide targets.
This is not the same as a local citation on a directory. Directory work keeps your name, address, and phone consistent across listings. AI Overview work makes a specific URL clear and useful enough that Google may link it inside a generative answer. Both matter for a dental practice; they are different jobs.
Google's own page on AI features and your website is the baseline: if a page can appear in Google Search with a snippet, it is eligible to be considered for AI features. There is no separate AI application form.
Eligibility before you chase citations
Fix the boring gates first. A page that is not indexed, blocked by robots.txt, or marked so it cannot show a snippet will not earn generative AI impressions no matter how well you rewrite the opening paragraph.
| Check | Where | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Indexed | Search Console URL Inspection | URL is on Google; request indexing only after a real fix |
| Snippet eligible | Page HTML and robots meta | No nosnippet or conflicting noindex on pages you want cited |
| Generative AI include | Search Console Settings | Search generative AI control left on include (default) |
| Crawlable body | View source / rich results tests | The answer is in HTML text, not only inside an image or a widget that never loads |
Since August 31, 2026, every site has a Search generative AI control. The default includes your links and content in AI Overviews and AI Mode. If someone switched it to exclude, you will see no generative AI impressions until you turn include back on.
Build pages worth linking
Google's guide on optimizing for generative AI features treats this work as SEO, not a separate sport. Pages that answer a real patient question clearly, with original practice detail, are the ones most likely to be linked. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, then add timing, exceptions, and what to do next.
Answer first
Open with the fact a patient asked for. Detail and caveats come after, still in plain text.
Practice-specific
Say how your office runs the visit, what to bring, and typical next steps. Generic filler is easy to skip.
One strong page
Cover one real question well. Do not publish a thin clone for every phrasing of the same ask.
Google's helpful content guidance still applies: write for people first, show who is responsible for the page, and avoid easily checked factual errors. For dental sites that usually means current hours, accurate insurance notes, and bios that match real clinicians.
Visible FAQ blocks help patients and give clear passages to quote. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search for ordinary sites, so write the questions for readers, not for a rich-result chase. Our FAQ page guide covers that pattern.
Keep practice facts consistent
AI systems compare what your site says with other signals Google already trusts. When the website phone number disagrees with the Google Business Profile, or two location pages list different addresses for the same office, you give both people and machines a reason to doubt the page.
- •Match name, address, and phone across the site, the Business Profile, and major directories.
- •Keep service lists honest. If you do not offer a treatment, do not invent a page for it hoping AI will cite you.
- •Use structured data that mirrors visible text. Google's structured data introduction stresses that markup should describe content users can already see.
- •For multi-office practices, give each office its own clear page and profile mapping. See multi-office location pages.
A group that needs one parent brand and a separate public identity for each office can follow AI search for multi-location dental groups.
Snippet control still matters. Google's snippet documentation explains how meta tags and robots rules can limit what Search may show. If you block snippets on a page you hope AI Overviews will link, you remove the path Google documents for eligibility.
Measure citations in Search Console
As of August 31, 2026, Search Console includes a Generative AI performance report for Search. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and you can group the data by page, country, device, and date. Impressions here mean generative AI link appearances, not a promise of clicks or booked visits.
- •Sort by page to see which URLs already earn AI impressions.
- •Compare those URLs with your regular Performance report under the Web search type; generative appearances also roll into that view.
- •If the report is empty, confirm the generative AI control is on include and that you have enough impressions for the report to appear.
- •Once a month, hand-test 10 front-desk questions in Google and note whether your site is linked. Trends beat one-off answers.
Pair the report with call and booking tracking so you know whether AI-linked visits turn into appointments. Our AI search visibility service page outlines how we approach that measurement for practices that want hands-on help.
Tactics Google says to skip
Google's generative AI optimization guide calls out several popular shortcuts that do not help on Google Search and can hurt quality:
- •Chopping pages into tiny chunks only for AI systems.
- •Rewriting copy just for AI tools instead of for patients.
- •Chasing inauthentic mentions or scaled doorway-style pages.
- •Publishing a separate thin page for every way a question can be phrased (that pattern can trip scaled-content spam rules).
Spend the time on eligibility, answer-first pages, and consistent facts. That is the same foundation that helps regular search, which is intentional: Google frames AI feature optimization as SEO.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a citation in Google AI Overviews?
In Search Console, a generative AI impression is counted when a link to your site is shown to a user inside a generative AI feature on Google Search. For now that covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Your page does not have to be the only link, and Google does not promise that every useful page will be linked.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file to get cited?
No. Google's AI features documentation says there are no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google also says Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files. Structured data should match visible content; it is not a separate AI ticket.
How is this different from local citations on directories?
Local citations are name, address, and phone listings on directories and maps. An AI Overview citation is a link to one of your pages inside Google's generative answer. Both reward consistent facts, but the work is different: clean listings versus clear, indexed pages that answer patient questions.
Why is my Generative AI performance report empty?
Search Console says the report is often missing when a site has not received enough generative AI impressions yet, or when the site is excluded through the Search generative AI control. Confirm the control is set to include, keep publishing useful indexed pages, and check again after more impressions accumulate.
Can I guarantee my practice will be cited?
No. Google does not offer citation guarantees, and AI answers change from query to query. Treat the Generative AI report and a short monthly hand test as trend tools. Improve pages that never appear, and reinforce pages that already earn impressions with clearer answers and internal links.
